The Big Brother Mentoring program is for boys age 6-14 who may benefit from the guidance, companionship and mentorship that a volunteer mentor can provide. Our volunteers have all been screened and trained to ensure the child's safety. Children may come from single parent, two parent or extended families.
After completing the application and training processes, Volunteers are "matched" with a Little Brother by one of our experienced Case Managers. Matches share weekly outings for a few hours either in the community or at the Big Brother's home.
Volunteers offer the child opportunities to participate in low cost activities such as sports, crafts, swimming, or other hobbies. They also provide a Little Brother with friendship, emotional support, and opportunites for improving both social skills and self esteem.
Our skilled staff provides matches with ongoing support, speaking frequently to the Big Brother, Little Brother and their families to ensure all is going well. Staff also arrange group activities throughout the year for matches to participate in such as parties, skiing, and sports events.
All mentoring volunteers must complete an application, provide 3 references, and a police check for themselves and those over 18 years of age living with them. Following this process, the volunteer will be interviewed by a case manager, visit the child at home, and complete orientation training with a child safety component.
There are currently 70 Big and Little matches in Halton with 45 boys still on the waiting list.
