The Homework Club is a after-school tutoring program offered to boys and girls in grades 3 to 8 who require academic, social and emotional support and would benefit from one-to-one homework tutoring with a caring volunteer. 

  • 16 Students and 16 Club Study Mentors with 2 supervisors attend each club 
  • Presently there are 18 active Clubs operating in Oakville, Milton, Acton & Georgetown 
  • Over 288 Volunteers are required to run the 18 programs

Students are referred to The Homework Club by their teachers if they satisfy one or more of the following criteria:

  • Below average academic history
  • Poor organizational skills
  • Low self esteem
  • Stress due to family problems
  • Economically disadvantaged
  • English as a second language

The Homework Club is conducted in designated Oakville, Milton, Acton and Georgetown Schools, Monday, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  
The Homework Clubmeets for one hour per week after-school from October to May.


Homework Club Study Mentors are adults and high school students from our community giving of their time to assist children who are experiencing academic difficulties or who require help in maintaining their grades. 

Youth volunteers are high school students who have a minimum of 70% grade average.  This is a great program for earning high school community service hours as well as gaining experience for future careers and references for jobs, post-secondary school or scholarships.

Homework Club Supervisors are adults require background and experience in most of these areas and demonstrate the following abilities :

    • Teaching or social work background
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Experience in supervising of children and teenagers in a group setting
    • Ability to manage a group of 35 young people in a positive manner
    • Empathy and understanding of children, who lack self-esteem, have significant difficulty with schoolwork or other social or emotional difficulties
    • Desire to work in a team
    • Reliability and ability to take charge
    • Problem solver
    • Willingness to devote 2 hours per week during the school year from approximately 3 – 5 p.m

All volunteers have the opportunity to make a positive impact on a child's learning experience by being matched with one student for a full school year.
  • Application Process consists of: 

    • Complete Application form
    • Provide 3 references  
    • Obtain Police Security Clearance form for yourself
    • An interview will be conducted by a Homework Club Co-ordinator
    • Training session with Child Safety training component
  • All Mentors/Supervisors require 3 references, a completed application form, interview, training session as well asa routine Police Clearance for Volunteers.   [A Police Clearance for Oakville volunteers can be arranged in person at the Halton Police Headquarters on Bronte Road.  Milton & Acton volunteers can go to Halton Regional Police Hqts at 490 Child's Dr. Georgetown volunteers can go to Halton Regional Police at 217 Guelph St.  For all locations you must take 2 pieces of ID, one with a photo.  The cost is $15.00 cash (no change available)].

    Homework Clubs operate at local Public and Catholic elementary schools in Oakville, Milton, Acton and Georgetown.
