Both men and women can become an In-School Mentor. A mentor is a volunteer over the age of 18 who is willing to spend one hour per week with a child in their school during the months of October through to June. Volunteers will be matched with boys and girlsbetween the ages of 5 and 12.

The match may play games, enjoy crafts, participate in sports or work on developing new skills. The time that they spend together is all about having fun. It's amazing how much this program can benefit a child.

Children who have struggled with poor self-esteem, difficulties getting along with peers, and problems with school work have all shown significant improvement after being matched with a mentor.

For the mentors, the experience is wonderful. Sharing one hour per week during the school months is a manageable time commitment that allows a volunteer to participate in a meaningful program that helps a child to reach his or her potential.

Schools and businesses are important partners in the program as well. Many businesses find that encouraging their employees to volunteer with the In-School Mentoring program is an important way for them to give back to the community.

There are currently 86 matches in 36 Halton schools, with 22 boys and girls waiting for an In-School Mentor. The children need you now more than ever.
